Golden centrepiece

The kitchen is the heart of every house and every apartment. It is the place where people cook and eat together, sit down to chat and tell stories, the place where celebrations are held and guests are received. The special importance of this room needs to be reflected in an interior design concept that is just as special: This was the idea of architect Julia Hauthaler from the Atelier Gitterle architect's office when she was entrusted with the task of designing a loft apartment in the Landeck district of Tyrol. Her idea was transformed into reality by the interior design and furnishings company Tischlerei Gitterle GmbH, with a showpiece apartment in black, white and gold.

Starting from scratch

The starting conditions in this case were anything but simple: the way the rooms had been divided up in the existing structure didn't fit in at all with the ideas or needs of the family of six who were to live there. So the first step involved completely gutting the top floor of the building. The result was a spacious, open-plan area for living, dining and cooking, with three rooms from the original apartment being combined to create one unit. The bedrooms and the bathroom are arranged around this centrepiece of the family apartment as if they are surrounding an atrium. As well as redesigning the room structure, the general renovation works also provided an opportunity to upgrade the insulation and fireproofing of the roof and to install new technology, including underfloor heating.

Black, white and grey

The architect paid particular attention to the colour scheme for the apartment, using it to create a contemporary, peaceful and harmonious atmosphere. The walls were painted in a shade of off-white, and specially designed pictures on printed wallpaper give the bedrooms an individual character. The furniture is consistently black and white throughout, with a charming contrast created by the grey used on individual elements of old wood on the roof beams, interior doors and walls.

Vibrant contrast

In the rather reserved atmosphere of this colour scheme, the kitchen provides a vibrant contrast. A warm gold was chosen and used in combination with dark marble on the rear wall and a black work surface. However, the cool feel of real metal didn't really appeal, and it was decided that a painted surface would deliver better resistance to scratches and fingerprints. After a conversation with ADLER's customer advisor for architects Manfred Höfurthner, some samples were produced in the ADLER laboratory in Schwaz that impressed both the building contractors and the architects. This was the coating structure that was ultimately used to paint the kitchen furniture in the Tischlerei Gitterle workshops: the MDF boards were first of all painted with the high-quality, opaque furniture varnish ADLER Pigmopur-Metallic in a warm shade of gold. ADLER Legnopur in the low degree of gloss G10 was then used as a topcoat to provide reliable protection, which is of course absolutely essential with kitchen furniture. The matt shade of gold is also found in some of the other rooms on individual furnishing elements such as the sideboards in the bedrooms. It not only provides an elegant highlight in the new apartment, but also underlines the very thing that the kitchen represents – the golden heart of family life.
